MADRID Dec. 14 () –
The new Prime Minister of France, François Bayrou, has begun an emergency meeting at the Matignon headquarters to evaluate the devastating passage of cyclone ‘Chido’ through the overseas department of Mayotte (an archipelago between Madagascar and Comoros) hit in the last hours due to winds of up to 226 kilometers per hour.
Beyrou took office this past Friday afternoon from his predecessor, Michel Barnier, forced to leave office after falling in a motion of no confidence, in the latest episode of the crisis due to the budget debate opened in the country.
The prefect of Mayotte, François-Xavier Bieuville, has warned on the Mayotte La1ere channel of an absolutely catastrophic situation in the archipelago, waiting to know the number of victims. The outgoing Minister of Transport, François Durovray, speaks of “significant damage” at Mayotte airport, “in particular to the control tower”, with the passage of the cyclone and more than 15,000 homes have been left without electricity.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Minister of Defense, Sébastien Lecornu, announced this Saturday the sending “as of this afternoon” of an A400M plane with humanitarian cargo and civil security resources to Mayotte to “respond to the urgency of the crisis” order of the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron.
“It is a moment of urgency. We will be there today and tomorrow,” the president said in a message published on his X social network account.
