The National Assembly of Nicaragua condemns the "absurd interference" of the European Parliament in Venezuela

Venezuelan Foreign Minister thanks Nicaragua for stance

September 20 () –

Nicaragua’s National Assembly on Thursday condemned the “absurd interference” of the European Parliament in Venezuela after approving a resolution recognizing opposition candidate Edmundo González as the “legitimate president” of the Latin American country.

The body has “denounced” and “condemned” the decision of the European Parliament, which it has accused of being characterized by “colonialist, neocolonialist and interventionist policies in matters that do not concern them,” according to a statement published on its account on the social network X.

“We denounce, reject and condemn the spurious resolution of this colonialist invasion body, on matters that only concern the Venezuelan people, its institutions, and in which entities such as this Parliament have nothing to do, whose interventionist blade we have also known, and repudiated, in our Nicaragua,” the letter continues.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil thanked the Nicaraguan Congress for its stance against the European Parliament’s decision, which he believes “seeks to impose subordinate leaders on free and sovereign nations.”

“Venezuela is not a colony of anyone, and the Venezuelan people will continue to defend their right to self-determination,” Gil added on his Telegram channel. It should be noted that the Venezuelan National Assembly has also condemned this resolution.

The joint resolution proposed by the Popular Party, the Conservatives and the Reformists, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Patriots, the group led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the leader of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, which includes Vox, was approved with 309 votes in favour, 201 against and 12 abstentions.

The initiative has also garnered the support of other right-wing and far-right groups, including Vox and Se Acabó la Fiesta, while the Social Democrats, Greens and the Left have rejected it, with the Liberals boycotting the vote. Among the Spanish representatives, the MEPs of PSOE, Sumar, Podemos, ERC, BNG and Bildu voted against in a vote in which 522 MEPs out of the 720 in the European Parliament participated.
