The spokesman for the Central Command of the National Police, Orlando Mudumane, explained in a press conference that two police officers who had finished their service “were detained on public roads and physically attacked to the point of death and their bodies burned,” according to what he gathered. the AIM news agency.
“The Police urge the Mozambican people to maintain serenity and to be attentive and vigilant, and to collaborate in reporting any act that disturbs public order, security and tranquility, as well as the free movement of people and goods in the country” , he declared.
However, the Mozambican NGO Eleitoral Decide Platform has indicated that at least three people have died and another six have been wounded by gunshots among Mondlane supporters, accounting for a total of 294 deaths since the protests began in October 2024.
“These three deaths were all recorded in the city of Maputo and are consequences of gunshots. They refer to people who were crowded together (…), waiting to see Mondlane pass by. And, in another context, the victims have been shot in the place where Mondlane spoke,” Decide director Wilker Dias told the Portuguese news agency Lusa.

The instigator of the protests is Venancio Mondlane, who has emerged as the main opposition figure, as well as the winner of the elections. Throughout these weeks he has insisted on his idea of taking office on January 15, although in recent weeks he has shown himself willing to negotiate.
The candidate of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Daniel Chapo, won the October 9 elections with 65 percent of the votes, well ahead of the 24 percent obtained by Mondlane who, according to his own figures , would have won with just over 53 percent.
