He Ministry of Education is set to host the 3rd meeting of the Education Working Group (EdWG) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The event will count with the participation of member countries of the G20, invited countries and invited organizations such as the OECD, UNESCO and UNICEF.

The three-day event will consist of a seminar/exhibition and working group meetings. The seminar on “Capacity Building for Lifelong Learning in the Context of the Future of Work” will be organized at the CSIR Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, in collaboration with the NSDC. Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, Government of India, will address the first day of the working group meetings.

Briefing the media during the pre-event press conference, Shri Sanjay K Murthy, Secretary for Higher Education, informed that the 3rd meeting of the EdWG will provide a platform for G20 members, invited countries and international organizations to deliberate on the zero draft of the G20 Minister of Education Statement based on input received from countries and international organizations. The recommendations that derive from this will be incorporated into the wording of the declaration that will be presented at the meeting of Ministers of Education to be held in Pune on June 22, 2023.

Shri Atul Tiwary, Secretary, Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, spoke about the highlights of the events leading up to the 3rd EdWG meeting and seminar. He informed the media that 1 lakh people have participated in the Jan Bhagidari events in Odisha since the Utkal Diwas, which began as a response to the Prime Minister’s clarion call to make the G20 Presidency a People’s Presidency. He also mentioned the ongoing exhibition on the future of G20 work on the CSIR-IMMT grounds, which was opened by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, as well as the conferences and workshops held place outside of the Working Group meetings.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, spoke about integrating competencies into the school curriculum and equipping children with a set of skills for the future in order for them to embark on the path of learning permanent. He also spoke about meeting the Singaporean delegates during the India-Singapore workshop held at the Taj Vivanta on the morning of April 25. He briefed the media on the various partnerships being explored between India and Singapore. The 4th meeting of the EdWG, to be held in Pune after the one in Bhubaneswar, will focus on basic literacy and numeracy, which is a crucial component of the National Education Plan 2020, he added.

More than 60 delegates from 27 countries and international organizations are expected to attend the meeting and seminar. In addition, papers from UNESCO, the meeting of the Working Group on Employment and the Working Group on Digital Economy will be discussed. The event will also include a multimedia exhibition featuring representatives from industry, academia and start-ups. The exhibition will be open to local institutions, students, academics and researchers from April 23 to 25 and April 27 to 28, 2023.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to visit the Konark Sun Temple as part of the tour component of the EdWG meetings. The event will highlight Odisha’s traditional arts and crafts through various cultural events scheduled in parallel to the G20 meetings.
