() – Part of the border between Italy and Switzerland will be redrawn as the human-caused climate crisis melts the glaciers that mark the boundary between the two countries.
The countries agreed to move the border below the Matterhorn peak, one of the highest peaks in the Alps, overlooking Zermatt, a popular ski destination.
Large stretches of the Swiss-Italian border are defined by glaciers and snowfields. “However, with the melting of glaciers, these natural elements are evolving and redefining the national border,” the Swiss government declared in a statement on Friday, signing a border adjustment agreement.
The approval process is underway in Italy. As soon as both parties have signed, the agreement will be published and the details of the new border will be announced, according to the Swiss government.
Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world and the impact on its glaciers is overwhelming. In Switzerland they are melting at an alarming rate. The country’s glaciers lost 4% of their volume last year, only surpassed by the record of 6% lost in 2022.
