April 21 () –
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will hold an urgent meeting with the chief commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, after an officer described an Israeli activist as “openly Jewish” during a pro-Palestinian protest in the British capital.
Sky News sources estimate that the mayor maintains “full confidence” in the commissioner despite the fact that the country's prime minister, Rishi Sunak, is “outraged” by what happened.
At the meeting, the mayor and chief commissioner will discuss “community relations” following the incident, which occurred exactly one week ago.
The activist involved is Gordon Falter, director of the NGO Campaign Against Antisemitism. In the video, an officer prevents Falter from crossing a street during a pro-Palestinian protest.
“You are openly Jewish,” an agent tells Falter, who is wearing the traditional kippah on his head. “This is a pro-Palestinian march. I'm not accusing him of anything but I'm worried about how people are going to react,” he adds.
Falter, who responded that he was simply on his way to a synagogue, was threatened with arrest if he did not leave the scene.
