The party of the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has obtained an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday in the country, according to provisional results, which give the National People's Congress (PNC) 68 of the 93 seats in Parliament.
In this way, the PNC would have a 'super majority' in the legislative body of the Maldives, since it will control more than two thirds of the seats, which allows Muizzu, which supports a rapprochement with China against its traditional ally, India , increase its weight in national politics.
Thus, the PNC has won more than 73 percent of the votes, a great distance from the main opposition party, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), which has won only ten seats after obtaining less than eleven percent. of the votes. The results are a hard blow for the MDP, which before the vote had the majority of seats.
Behind them are independent candidates, who have added a total of eleven seats and more than 11.8 percent of the ballots, as well as the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), with two seats, and the Maldives National Party and the Jumhuri Party, with one seat each.
Since coming to power after the September presidential elections, the former opposition leader and now president has begun a campaign to distance himself from New Delhi, demanding the withdrawal of the Indian military contingent in the country, which will initially occur in the second week of May. The expulsion order came in January, after Muizzu visited China for five days.
Likewise, Malé signed a “military assistance” agreement with China in March for non-lethal weapons that will be delivered free of charge, an agreement that also includes training tasks for the Maldivian security forces, something that until now was carried out by India. and the United States.
