Mexico impacts Spotify through the corrido tumbado

This year, Spotify hosted its first music festival. It was Mexcla, an event that brought together artists from the banda, hip-hop and reggaeton genres, among others, all of national origin, something that demonstrated the relevance that the country has for the platform.

“Mexico has always been key to Spotify’s global success,” commented Mia Nygren, general director of Spotify for Latin America, within the framework of this event during an interview with Expansión.

Nygren, who knows closely the behavior of the music industry at a regional level, maintains that this success of Mexican music is something that has been “in the making for a long time” and that its rise “is not a fad.”

An example of this is that last decade, in the popularity lists for Spotify in Mexico there were only foreign artists, but currently the most listened to music in the country is Mexican, in addition to regional Mexican music already occupying an important place. on the world charts.

The native of Zapopan, Jalisco, Peso Pluma, this year ranked number seven among the most listened to artists worldwide, only behind Taylor Swift, The Weekend, Bad Bunny, Drake, Billie Eilish and Tavis Scott.

“When we started, 80% of the most listened to artists were not Mexican, now it is completely the other way around, that is, in a decade we have made a turn and now local talent dominates led by regional Mexican music that has been so successful outside of the country’s border,” Nygren commented.
