The Libyan House of Representatives, the Parliament based in the east of the country, announced on Tuesday the suspension of the parallel prime minister, Fazi Bashaga, and his replacement by the finance minister, Osama Hamad, within the framework of a duplication of institutions by the refusal of the prime minister of unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibé, to resign after the postponement of the presidential elections called in December 2021.
The president of the Libyan Parliament, Abdullah Bliheg, has indicated in a message on his account on the social network Twitter that “the House of Representatives has voted by majority to suspend the prime minister, Fazi Bashaga, and refer him to an investigation against him.” Thus, he has said that Hamad will perform the functions of prime minister and finance minister.
The decision has been adopted during a session aimed at addressing the management of the parallel government since it took office in February 2022 and hours after Bashaga himself tried to cede his powers to his ‘number two’. The politician has not reacted for now to his dismissal.
The country is divided into two administrations after the House of Representatives ended Dbeibé’s term due to the postponement of the presidential elections and appointed Bashaga, a decision that dealt a blow to efforts to end the conflict.
Dbeibé was elected as prime minister by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in February 2021, replacing the until then prime minister of unity, Fayez Serraj, who agreed to cede his powers after the consultation process, which began after a ceasefire agreement after the Tripoli authorities rejected the military offensive launched in April 2019 by General Khalifa Haftar, aligned with the authorities based in the east.
