The leader of the Taliban orders the release of almost 2,200 prisoners in Afghanistan on the occasion of Eid al Adha

June 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Taliban, Mullah Hebatullah Ajundzada, has ordered the release of nearly 2,200 prisoners on the occasion of the celebration of Eid al Adha, one of the most important festivities for Muslims, as confirmed by the Supreme Court of Afghanistan.

The court has indicated in a statement published on its account on the social network Twitter that Ajundzada’s decision has involved the release of 2,178 inmates, while another 489 have benefited from sentence reductions.

At the moment there are no details about the identities of those released, although the prominent activist Matihulá Uesa would remain in prison, as reported by the Afghan news agency Jaama Press. The Taliban have not yet ruled on this point.

Uesa, founder of the network of PenPath schools for girls in Afghanistan, was arrested in March by the Taliban, to whom the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) demanded the release of the activist and that they reveal “the reasons for his arrest”.

PenPath is a volunteer organization founded in 2009 that focuses on campaigns to reopen schools for girls and adolescents, on girls’ education, on establishing libraries, and on “ending corruption in the education sector.”
