The head of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, has appealed to his theoretical partners to counteract the great coalition that seeks to advance social democracy with the rest of the formations that have shown themselves in favor of following the path marked by the European Union and NATO.
“I appeal to all the patriots of this country (…) regardless of what separates us, of the differences between us, it is time to close ranks,” he said in a video published on his social networks in response to the start this Monday of the talks between the ruling party and the rest of the parties.
“If the globalists, the antichrists, the corrupt gather, it is time for us to unite too. I call on each of you to join the AUR,” he appealed, proposing a large “sovereignty” bloc to prevent the “betrayal” of conservatives and social democrats from continuing.
On December 1, in the midst of uncertainty about the validity of the first round of the presidential elections on November 24 – which were finally canceled by the Constitutional Court last week – and which placed the pro-Russian Calin Georgescu as the winner, the Romanians They came to vote to renew Parliament.
Although the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) emerged the winner of these legislative elections, like the rest of the formations that are committed to following the European and Atlanticist path, its parliamentary representation was reduced due to the advance of the AUR and two other forces that entered the Parliament for the first time.
These are the Youth Party (POT) and SOS Romania, which together have more than 50 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and another 20 in the Senate. Both parties expressed their support for Georgescu in the presidential elections that, after the ruling of the Constitutional Court, are still awaiting a new date.
The call from Simion, whose party was the second most voted force, managing to double the results of the previous elections, comes when this week the Social Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives and the Hungarian minority party plan to begin negotiations to form a coalition.
The PSD will argue that as it is the force with the most votes, it has the right to appoint the new prime minister in the hypothetical government. The Social Democrats trust that the current one, Marcel Ciolacu, will reconsider the resignation he presented after his candidacy was not among the two most voted in the presidential elections.
This coalition would obtain the necessary support to form majorities in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
