Chapter 5 of The Last of Us debuted earlier than expected and left fans more than satisfied. Craig Mazin, scriptwriter for the production, took the opportunity to reveal that Watchman it served as the inspiration for an important element of the episode involving Ellie and Sam.
The creative explained that the work of Alan Moore and DC gave him ideas to represent the comic Savage Starlight, which the characters encounter and which serves as a reflection of the theme of the entire series. Specifically, Mazin stated that the idea of ”enduring and surviving” originated from Watchman.

“The whole idea of this comic is very inspired by Watchman. There is a comic within the story that reflects on what is happening in the world,” Mazin said during the most recent podcast dedicated to the series (via Comic Book).
The creative assured that his goal was to do something similar in The Last of Us with the science fiction comic. so he filed Savage Starlight as a story that talks about relationships and love, essential themes of the HBO series.
Mazin wanted a line in the comic that would perfectly describe these themes so relevant to the Naughty Dog franchise. In the end, he thought that the saga is based on survival, so he had an idea to find the ideal motto.
“And I was like, ‘It should have a motto that the main hero says.’ And I’m like, ‘What could be some kind of cheesy tagline? Well, our game is about survival’ . So I went to thesaurus.com, searched for ‘survival’ and ‘endure’ came up, and I thought: ‘Endure and survive! There is’. It’s very significant, obviously it has a great thematic resonance,” added the creative.
