Is Ellie immune to Cordyceps thanks to Anna?
We say this because the final episode, Look for the Light, includes scenes from before the original game that show Ellie’s mom Anna for the first time, played by Ellie’s in-game voice actress (Ashley Johnson). In the universe of the game and the comics, Anna’s mother died 1 day after giving birth to Ellie, the details are unknown.
But in the TV series it is revealed that Anna in labor was trying to escape from an infected one; in fact, Ellie was born in the middle of the struggle that she had with the infected, which unfortunately ended up biting and thus transmitting the fungus to Anna.
The most interesting thing is that just when she realized that the infected bit her leg and that Ellie had just been born, Anna wasted no time and cut the umbilical cord that linked her to Ellie for fear that the baby would also be infected.
The mystery of Ellie’s immunity remains without an official explanation
As a result of this, many believe that Ellie gained immunity to the fungus thanks to being exposed to the fungus for a very short period and indirectly, which would have allowed the infection to not be so strong and lethal and basically turned her into a carrier person.
According to Marlene, doctors believe that Cordyceps has developed in her since she was born and her body has produced a kind of “chemical messenger” that makes the fungus believe that she is already infected. However, this would be inconsistent. We say this because despite being infected, Ellie has been attacked several times by infected, which means that the fungus does not recognize her as an infected being (as it happened with Tess), but as someone “healthy” that she must infect.
In the game, something similar is referred to, only Marlene explicitly talks about a mutation that occurred to the fungus inside Ellie and that is apparently what prevents her from becoming infected. The key is mutation, since that would better explain why the infected do attack her, since the fungus would identify something strange in her original essence.
It is important to remember that the digital Cordyceps detectors do recognize Ellie as infected in the series, but the infected or the dogs are not capable.
Judging by the details, then Ellie would be immune in one way or another in the series, but the Cordyceps continues to take her as uninfected despite the fact that the fungus is installed in her brain (as the doctors believe).
In case you missed it: Abby appeared in the series of The Last of Us?
As you can see, episode 9 of the TV series is far from answering this question in the universe of The Last of Us. And to that is added the response of the creator of the series and vice president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann.
According to the creative (via The Verge), the fact that Anna cut Ellie’s umbilical cord once infected does not answer the question of her immunity “conclusively”, so there is the possibility that it is a coincidence and the reason for the immunity is something other than not yet is revealed, so the speculation will continue.
