The first thing we did in the Beta of Modern Warfare II was to play as we have always played a Call of Duty: aggressively, running and jumping carelessly. Serious mistake. We were immediately shot down over and over again mercilessly and couldn’t understand why we were failing so much. Thus we realized that this delivery of Call of Duty wants to be a bit tactical. That is, it has a slow pace of play; it’s now sneaky and requires you to pay attention to your surroundings and your instruments like never before in the series.

In Modern Warfare II the sound will be of great importance and it shows that it is a department that received a great update, since you can hear every action of your enemies; from the grenades that burst floors and walls to the footsteps and the noise they make when walking and running. It looks like an ASMR session.
That said, the game did force us to pause for a moment to listen to our surroundings, and yes, we did notice that it forced our opponents to camp a bit; we even used the infamous technique of tactical waiting.
Another detail that reinforces the previous feeling is the new system for reloading weapons. Traditionally, when your character’s reload animation is interrupted, for example when a bandit is in front of you, it’s common to cancel the reload by toggling between your primary and secondary weapons to return to a state before the reload animation begins. In Modern Warfare IIwhen you interrupt the reload action, the game does not return you to the state before you activated the reload, but instead resumes the animation.
Now what’s wrong with this? On the one hand, we like it because it reinforces the tactical feel where you have to think about every move, however, it leaves players with fast and aggressive playstyles very exposed.
The same goes for the minimap. Oh, what controversy is being unleashed with this. As you know, the tradition in Call of Duty dictates that when a weapon is fired, a red dot appears on the map. In Modern Warfare II things are a bit different, as the red dots only appear when there is an active UAV. In all other situations, red dots appear on the compass at the top. As we said, these changes reinforce the tactical feel of the game, as you will now have to be aware of your surroundings and your instruments and, above all, rely on your instincts and control skills like never before in the series. That said, overall we liked the changes, though we also think they’re so drastic that they’re betraying the essence of the series a bit.
But not everything is positive; we also noticed that the jump is very powerful. This causes an interesting dichotomy, where the game tries to be tactical and leisurely, but hesitates to completely break tradition and maintains proven systems in the series. In our opinion, Infinity Ward should dare to break tradition, however, this means betraying generations of players.

Think of the Gunsmith 2.0 system as skill trees. Here, each armament has different platforms. For example, the M4 can be transformed into a light machine gun, a sniper rifle, and a submachine gun. As we said, grind will always be there, but at least now you will be able to use previously unlocked attachments when you start uploading a new platform, which is good news. It’s also a little reassuring knowing that there’s only room to equip 5 attachments, so you’ll have to consciously decide what to equip and what to leave out in order to have a competitive weapon.
On the other hand, we feel that the modality lacked a bit of clarity, in addition to the fact that, in general, there is a lack of work in relation to past installments of Gunsmith, since in them you could see in detail the final result of your armament. In Modern Warfare II you only see the static image.
One of the traditions of each installment of Call of Duty are the Perks; Modern Warfare II could not be exempt from them, but they return with important changes. The first is that they can now be grouped by packs, instead of being selected individually, and now you’ll have to earn the last 2 perks. Modern Warfare II implements a controversial system where perks are unlocked after a certain amount of time. This means that at the beginning of the game you will only have 2 of the 4 you chose. We’re not entirely happy with the changes, as they invalidate some perk-reliant playstyles and make them viable up to 8 minutes later.
It needs a lot of work. It is evident because it is only an attraction that you try out of curiosity, but strangely you return for pleasure. However, the first impression is positive and, again, due to the pace of the game. We found this interesting, as players now get so much more information from having a third person view: now you can see what’s around the corner, which was previously impossible. This forces you to hug corners and wait for an opponent to peek out before springing out with a deadly flurry. Obviously nobody stops the rival from doing the same.
In fact, at some point we thought we were playing a Ghost Recon; We liked to imagine what the game would be like in that alternate universe where this franchise is still alive and true to its roots…. But back to reality, the third person mode of Modern Warfare II he is still in diapers; it even gives the impression that it is a fan-made mod.
For example, the sight is not accurate; it is common to miss throwing grenades, as the center of aim is not aligned with the throw. Then the shooting action needs an extra step between hip fire and steel sights. The potential is there, but we doubt that, at some point in his life, Call of Duty change to offer a different experience. Even so, we will continue thinking about what would happen; for example, imagine a third-person spinoff. Maybe some day.

Finally, we have one of the new game modes: Invasion. This modality gave us the impression that it tries to offer an experience close to a certain franchise that fell out of favor lately, since it has massive confrontations with high enemy counts per game; vehicles are even added to the mix. Initially the mode is fun as it’s a different way to experience the new game systems, however the result is a bit bland as it’s just a glorified Team Deathmatch, where objectives and in-game pop-ups are conspicuous by their absence. .

I welcomed the changes, perhaps in part because of the powerful feeling conveyed by the weaponry, as the visual presentation is impeccable and the sound department does it justice. Without a doubt, a title that bears all the quality seal of Infinity Ward.
