The Justice of Benin sends to prison two of the three accused of attempting a coup d'état

Oct. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

A court in Benin this Tuesday sent influential businessman Olivier Boko – close to the president, Patrice Talon – and former Sports Minister Oswald Homeky to prison for allegedly attempting to carry out a coup d’état scheduled for Friday of last week in collaboration with the commander of the Republican Guard, Dieudonné Tévouedjré.

Both Boko and Homeky appeared before the special prosecutor of the Court for the Suppression of Economic Infractions and Terrorism (CRIET), Mario Metonou, after which they were transferred to prison, according to the Benin TV channel.

The three defendants were arrested last week in an operation in which six bags full of money were seized from Homeky’s house with some 500 million CFA francs (about 76 million euros) out of a total of 1.5 billion CFA francs ( almost 230 million euros) promised to the commander to carry out the coup.

Boko’s lawyers have denounced the arrest process carried out, and that he was allegedly intercepted at night by an unmarked vehicle while he was accompanied by his wife.
