MADRID 19 Oct. () –
The Minister of Justice of Italy, Carlo Nordio, criticized this Saturday the “abnormal” judicial ruling that vetoes the sending of immigrants from Italy to Albania, a position that has been criticized by the Italian opposition, which has called for resignations.
“It cannot be the judicial power that defines a more or less secure State (…). I would consider it almost sacrilege to think that the Government to which I belong declares war on the judicial power. It is not like that and it never will be. The reaction of the politicians has not been against the judiciary, but against the merit of this sentence that we do not share and even consider abnormal,” Nordio declared, according to the newspaper ‘Corriere della Sera’.
In response, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, has described the minister’s statements as “very serious.” “This institutional clash fueled by the Government to cover up its inability is very serious,” he noted during a demonstration by the majority unions in the People’s Square in Rome.
“In a democratic country, a Minister of Justice who launches such a harsh attack against the judiciary and its independence cannot remain in his position,” added the spokesperson for Justice of the Democratic Party, deputy Debora Serracchiani.
“Nordio is one of the most visible symbols of the failure of this Government. This morning’s attack on the judiciary goes beyond what was expected, trampling on it. The Minister of Justice! Constitutional principles make him incompatible with that function,” he said. added.
From the Left Green Alliance, Angelo Bonelli has also criticized the minister’s “intolerable actions” and has also asked for his resignation. “Words of unprecedented gravity. A Minister of Justice who responds to an unwanted decision by the Government by declaring that he will take action (…) is a statement that cannot be tolerated and is part of a framework of systematic attacks that have occurred in these hours against the judiciary by Prime Minister (Giorgia) Meloni,” he denounced.
“We now find ourselves on the threshold of totalitarianism, which is why we ask for the immediate resignation of Minister Nordio, who tramples on fundamental principles of our Constitution,” he stressed.
