Netanyahu summons the defense minister to a meeting in his office after he publicly opposed judicial reform

The Supreme Court has asked the Attorney General of Israel, Gali Baharav-Miara, and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to rule on the recently approved law to prevent the recusal of ‘Bibi’ after a civil organization presented before the court a letter in which he assured that he was incapacitated to hold his position due to the judicial cases opened against him for alleged corruption.
The Knesset, or Israeli Parliament, has approved this very Thursday a controversial law to modify the conditions for recusal of the position of prime minister in response, precisely, to the petition of the aforementioned civil organization before the Supreme Court.
Despite this, the highest Israeli court has not issued any provisional order to freeze the implementation of the recently approved law, so it could take effect immediately and thus protect Netanyahu from the court’s requests, as reported by the newspaper. ‘The Times of Israel’.
The proposed amendment to the Basic Law, which is the one that sets the terms of the recusal, would eliminate the power of the Israeli Justice to issue decisions on the suspension of a prime minister and would empower the Government to do so with a three-quarters majority vote. .
This occurs within the framework of the controversial judicial reform promoted by Netanyahu, which has caused internal friction within the coalition government, of which several far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties are part.
Indeed, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has urged the prime minister to stop the legislation, as its “unilateral” application would harm the Army as well as Israel’s ties to the United States. Netanyahu has summoned Gallant to a meeting in his office over his public statements against reform.
As reported by ‘The Jerusalem Post’ earlier this week, Gallant, who explained during a forum that the proposed reform is generating rejection among the military, would be willing to resign if Netanyahu does not give in to his demands.
