The death toll from the military offensive launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip following the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions against Israeli territory is close to 40,700.
The Hamas-controlled Gazan health ministry said the offensive had so far left 40,691 dead and 94,060 wounded, adding that “the Israeli occupation has committed five massacres against families in the Gaza Strip” over the past 48 hours, with 89 dead and 205 wounded taken to hospitals in the Palestinian enclave.
The Ministry of Health, as it has done on other occasions, has indicated that “there are victims under the rubble and on the roads,” before adding that “ambulance and civil defense teams cannot reach them.”
Gazan authorities have said that around 10,000 people are missing, so the death toll could be much higher than officially announced.
Israel launched its offensive against the Strip following the attacks on October 7, which left nearly 1,200 people dead and some 240 kidnapped. In addition to these casualties, more than 630 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in operations by Israeli forces or in attacks by settlers since that date.
At least 580 people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured in Lebanon as a result of Israeli attacks, according to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
