The security cabinet of the Israeli Council of Ministers has approved this Sunday a package of economic, displacement and security measures to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and prevent its “collapse”.
These measures, not yet made explicit, seek to “prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority,” according to an official government statement, but are conditional on the Palestinian Authority “ceasing its activities against Israel in the international arena and legal diplomacy.” in reference to the complaints filed before the International Criminal Court (ICC) about war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Israeli Armed Forces, according to the Israeli press.
They also call for an end to “hate incitement” in the school curriculum and in the media, an end to payments to families of “martyrs” and prisoners, and an end to construction in areas deemed “illegal” in Area C. They also call on the Palestinian Authority to work to prevent “terrorist” actions.
The initiative has been raised by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu and has been approved by eight members of the cabinet, rejected by one and another has abstained. The Israeli press speculates on the names of Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, the two most radical members of the Government.
Sources from the Israeli security apparatus quoted by Channel 13 had warned the Israeli Government of a possible fall of the Palestinian Authority and for this reason they had requested the urgent processing of this aid. It also seeks to tackle Iranian influence in the West Bank.
