The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced this Monday that the troops of Division 98 have been withdrawn from southern Lebanon, where a ceasefire agreement with the Shiite Hezbollah party-militia is in force, and will head towards the Strip. of Gaza, where fighting with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) is still active.

This was highlighted by the Israeli Army in a statement in which they highlighted that this division has “completed its mission” in the area after “three months of prolonged fighting in Hezbollah’s terrorist strongholds”, with which Israel reached a ceasefire agreement at the end of last November.

“Now the division’s forces are preparing for the next mission in the Gaza Strip sector,” added the IDF, which has also published a short video showing different moments of the 98 Division’s operations. in the south of Lebanese territory.

Israel and Hezbollah agreed several weeks ago on a ceasefire agreement for the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of both from southern Lebanon, where the regular Lebanese Army must take positions to guarantee the security of the Israeli State. However, both sides have accused each other of failing to comply with the agreement.

Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel intensified after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 – which left almost 1,200 dead and 240 hostages – and the subsequent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which this Monday has already surpassed. 45,000 dead and around 107,000 injured.

The toll of victims from the conflict in Lebanon is notably lower, as the Lebanese authorities have reported nearly 4,000 deaths. In both conflicts, Israel has managed to eliminate a large part of the political and military leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah, such as the Palestinians Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniye, or the Lebanese Hasan Nasrallah.
