MADRID 6 Nov. () –
The Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoiseach), Simon Harris, announced this Wednesday his “intention” to call general elections for next November 29, several months before October next year, the maximum date on which the vote should be called. .
The president offered an interview for Irish radio and television RTE in which he acknowledged that his plans include “seeking the dissolution” of the Lower House, the Irish Assembly (Dáil Eireann), this Friday and calling elections for the end of the month.
Harris was appointed Irish Prime Minister at the beginning of last April, after Leo Varadkar made a surprise announcement of his resignation citing “personal and political reasons.” Until then Harris had served as Minister of Education.
Ireland held its last general election in February 2020, when Sinn Fein emerged victorious with 24.5 percent of the vote. However, Varadkar’s Fine Gael managed to gather the necessary support to lead the coalition Executive.
Prime Minister Harris himself already left the door open to holding elections a few weeks ago, when he stressed that the elections “are not very far away” and showed his intention to call the vote before the end of the year.
Harris replaced Varadkar also at the head of Fine Gael, and now the polls show him as the favorite with 25 percent of voting intention ahead of Fianna Fail (24 percent) and with a comfortable lead over Sinn Fein, which would fall more than ten points.
