The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has announced this Sunday the seizure of a foreign cargo ship with 1.45 million liters of fuel that was heading to one of the Gulf countries, according to sources from the Judiciary to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. .

The ten crew members of the ship have also been arrested, according to the president of the Bushehr Provincial Supreme Court (in the southwest of the country), magistrate Mehdi Mehrangiz, without giving further details about the nationality of the sailors.

The seizure took place after the Revolutionary Guard determined that the route of the ship and the contents of its cargo had not been approved by the country’s authorities.

Iran, known for having some of the lowest fuel prices in the world due to subsidies and devaluation of its national currency, has for years grappled with the rampant smuggling of fuel across its borders to neighboring countries and via shipping lanes. to the Gulf states.
