11 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Indonesian Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a court ruling that allowed the general and presidential elections scheduled for 2024 to be postponed for several years.
A district court in Jakarta, the country’s capital, had previously ordered a halt to all campaign activities and postponed the election date to at least 2026, two years later.
However, the Supreme Court considers that the suspension constitutes an “overreach” by the lower court and has ruled that the elections must be held as planned and on the date already indicated, as reported by the Antara news agency.
The president of the court, Sugeen Riyono, has stated that the district court lacks the relevant authority and competence to make this decision, which drew criticism from politicians and political parties, who were not in favor of such a move.
