The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of Mahmoud Hamdan, bodyguard of the head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, during an operation this Friday in the city of Rafá, just 200 meters from where the operation against the leader of the Palestinian Islamists.

Hamdan served as commander of the Hamas battalion in Tel al-Sultan, in Rafah, and had guarded the house where Sinwar was hiding in that same neighborhood until Wednesday’s operation, which according to the IDF caught the Israeli troops themselves by surprise. They didn’t know it was there.

Likewise, he was also responsible for guarding six Israeli hostages, who ended up dying in August. Their bodies were found in one of the Hamas tunnels in Rafah, where traces of Sinwar’s DNA were also found, according to the IDF.

Sinwar – considered the mastermind of the October 7 attacks – was elected last August as leader of the Palestinian organization to replace Ismail Haniye, killed in an Israeli action in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The late Sinwar was listed as one of the founders of the military wing of Hamas and remained imprisoned in Israel from 1989 until 2011, when he was released in an exchange agreed to achieve the delivery of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, into the hands of the organization. Palestinian Islamist.
