The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) reiterated Wednesday in a press release their willingness to visit El Salvador and provide assistance in the field of human rights when the Central American nation has already added a year under the exception regime.
“The IACHR calls for the adoption of the necessary measures to restore the suspended rights and guarantees and reiterates its willingness to visit the country and collaborate technically in the implementation of inter-American human rights standards,” the entity declared.
On March 27, 2022, the government of Nayib Bukele relied on the Legislative Assembly to implement the measure and since then has extended it monthly.
An estimated 65,795 people have been detained, according to government data cited by the IACHR.
Different governments and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have protested the measureaccusing the government of imprisoning innocent people without evidence, as well as have caused his death more than a hundred suspected gang members in their custody.
However, the same IACHR acknowledges that with the implementation of the extreme operation El Salvador “achieved an unprecedented reduction in crime.”
The Central American government reported last March, shortly after completing one year under the strong measures, which already accumulated “215 days with zero homicides.”
The body, however, urged San Salvador to restore the previous constitutional order. “The IACHR urges the State to respect human rights in adopting measures to prevent, control, and respond to crime, as well as to investigate, prosecute, and punish criminal activities.”
