The leader of the Huthi insurgency in Yemen, Abdulmalik Badradin al Huthi, has assured that his group intends to facilitate a possible peace agreement with the Yemeni government through Oman’s mediation efforts, but has also warned that patience may come to an end after denouncing new attacks by the Saudi coalition that supports the authorities.
“We are going to give the Omanis an opportunity to examine our demands,” said the Huthi leader this past Friday night, during the commemoration of the figure of the founder of the Ansarullah movement — the unofficial name of the insurgency –, Sayed Hussein bin Badr al Din al Huthi.
“However, if the aggressor continues to make no effort to achieve a serious and practical understanding of our humanitarian and quality of life problems, our patience will run out,” the Houthi leader reported, reported by the Iranian agency Tasnim.
In his speech, the insurgent leader also accused the United States of “violating the sovereignty of countries” and of giving its ambassadors carte blanche so that they “interfere in all possible matters.”
The war in Yemen pits the internationally recognized government, now represented by the Presidential Leadership Council and supported by the international coalition led by Saudi Arabia, against the Houthis, backed by Iran. The Houthis control the capital, Sana’a, and parts of the north and west of the country.
The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, is trying to bring positions closer between the parties to relaunch the peace process, after the truce agreed in April 2022 expired in October on the occasion of the start of the month of Ramadan and was subsequently extended on several occasions.
