The Hungarian Prime Minister sees in the conflict in Ukraine the beginning of an "era of war" in Europe

July 15 () –

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has warned that with the conflict in Eastern Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine – ordered by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, at the end of February – a “age of war” on the European continent.

The Hungarian head of government has granted an interview to the Kossuth Radio station, collected by the ‘Budapest Times’ newspaper, in which he has pointed out that the war in Ukraine is also being waged on the international map in economic matters.

For Orbán, today a “great battle” is taking place for energy resources, while other conflicts such as “the fight for jobs” are looming due to the sanctions imposed on Russia by a large part of the international community in response to the invasion of its neighboring country.

“Everyone who has a job to value it and do everything possible to keep it, because the next few months are expected to bring an economic recession in Europe,” Prime Minister Orbán said.

In this sense, the president has called on the European Union to assume that “it was wrong” and that the sanctions against Russia have failed because, in fact, they are harming Europe to a greater extent than the Eurasian nation itself.

“(The European Union) thought that they could shorten the war through sanctions because weakening Russia would yield quick results, but the war continues,” said Orbán, who has assured that Hungary will have energy supply, although this will be at “a price very high”.

Finally, the prime minister has stressed that the correct solution to a war situation is cooperation and not political speculation, in a blow to the Hungarian opposition, which has criticized the measures approved by Orbán to tackle the crisis.

At this point, he has criticized that his political rivals are not people who can be trusted, “much less in conditions of war”, and has accused them of being “sitting idly” and then trying to “ride waves” of protest after the approval of the measures.
