In this edition of Carousel des Arts we attend an exhibition in Paris that shows the creative crisis experienced by the painter Henri Matisse in the 1930s. In addition, we tell you about a play that brings us closer to the harsh separation of a couple. Also coming to France is ‘Un varón’, a Colombian film that talks about the codes of masculinity. And in our musical chronicle, we visit a mythical nightclub in the French capital, ‘Les Bains’, which has been a springboard for various artists.

A sixty-year-old Henri Matisse, at the height of his glory, but doubting himself and his art. This is what the ‘Matisse’ exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris highlights. The show brings together a collection of works from French and American museums.

The exhibition begins with a painting painted during the crisis, a period that lasted 10 years, in which Matisse tirelessly sought to give new impetus to his painting.

“It is a very beautiful portrait of a woman, but where Matisse’s anguish can be noticed; it’s almost a combat against paint. And we end up with a completely different canvas, the romanian blouse from 1940: a woman in a beautiful white blouse, very stylized, a balanced and serene composition. Matisse reinvents himself, he understands that his painting is a mental act and he shows it, ”the exhibition’s curator, Cécile Debray, told RFI.

While they are fighting, the apartment where they live collapses, while a soprano and five musicians accompany the action. That’s crazy story no drumby French director Samuel Achache, currently on tour in France.
