The head of the Central Command of the United States Armed Forces (CENTCOM), Michael Kurilla, visited this Tuesday the US troops present in Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the international coalition against the Islamic State, who during On the day they have lost control of the strategic cities of Deir Ezzor and Manbij in favor of the alliance of jihadists and Syrian rebels backed by Türkiye.

“Today, December 10, Kurilla visited military commanders and members of the US forces, as well as our partners in the coalition against the Islamic State, the SDF, at several bases in Syria. He received a first-hand assessment of the force protection measures, the rapid evolution of the situation and the ongoing efforts to prevent the Islamic State from expanding in the current situation,” reads a CENTCOM statement published on its profile on the social network X.

During the day, Kurilla moved to the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, where he met with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohamed Shia al Sudani; the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Abdul Amir Rashid Yaralá; and the deputy commander of Iraqi joint operations, General Qais al Mujamad Awai.

“The leaders discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional security, the rapidly changing situation in Syria, as well as operations to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq,” he said. They also discussed the “continuing partnership between the coalition and Iraqi forces.”

Additionally, the head of CENTCOM has met with General Kevin Leahy, commander of the International Coalition against Islamic State, and his staff to evaluate the mission within both Iraq and Syria.
