The head of Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Education and Science (Rosobrnadzor), Anzor Muzaev, has argued that children of migrants entering the country must have a minimum level of knowledge of the Russian language before being able to access the education system.
“I am a radical. If you come here with your family and are going to become a citizen or live temporarily, if you want your children to be educated in this country, then they must have a certain level of knowledge of the language,” Muzaev said in an interview with Russian broadcaster RBC.
Muzaev stressed that if students do not have the optimal level, not only is their learning ability hampered, but it also makes it impossible for “people to respect the Russian language.” “It is clear that they may have shortcomings in some other areas, but they must know the language,” he stressed.
According to data from the Russian Ministry of Education, compiled by the TASS news agency, around twelve percent of immigrant children in Russia – which translates to around 25,000 people – finish the school year without speaking Russian or with a poor knowledge of the country’s official language.
