The International Court of Justice, the main judicial body of the United Nations based in The Hague, announced this Thursday that it will hold public hearings on April 30 and May 1 to review the complaint filed by Mexico against Ecuador after the raid of its embassy in Quito earlier this month.
The Mexican government denounced the Andean country for the violent invasion of Ecuadorian security forces into its diplomatic headquarters on April 5 and the physical attacks on its officials during the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who has two convictions and an open investigation for corruption and had received asylum from Mexico one day before his arrest.
Mexico considered this act a “flagrant transgression of the inviolability” of its embassy and international law and also presented a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to denounce the incident. The international community joined in condemning what happened.
The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador wants Ecuador to be temporarily expelled from the UN as long as there is no apology and recognition of the violation of Mexican sovereignty and a future procedure is defined in the United Nations system in case a similar situation is repeated.
The tension between both countries began two days before the invasion of the diplomatic headquarters with statements by López Obrador about the last elections in Ecuador, held in October and in which Daniel Noboa won.
The next day Mexico granted asylum to Glas. After the events at the embassy, The Mexican government broke relations with Ecuador.
This week, Mexico received the almost unanimous support of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Venezuela and Honduras also announced the closure of their embassies in Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian government has defended its actions arguing that he was not going to allow there to be “impunity” and that Glas was taking refuge in the Mexican embassy despite having criminal proceedings against him for common crimes.
