The growth of smart doorbells in Mexico depends on insecurity

Mordor Intelligence notes that the size of the Mexico surveillance camera market in 2024 is estimated at $750,000, and is expected to reach $1.21 billion in 2029, growing at a CAGR of 9.30% in this period.

According to the consulting firm, these systems “deter crime and often lead to reductions in criminal activity.”

Given this panorama, Mexico is a potential market in the matter; However, according to Ricardo Martí Arena, managing director for Latin America of the Ring and Blink brands, the installation of traditional video surveillance systems can be complex, which is why other alternatives have emerged on the market, such as easy-to-install smart doorbells.

These devices, he explained, belong to the field of smart home security, a market that is expected to grow approximately 12.6% compounded annually.

“Security in particular is a very important issue that is catapulting the adoption” of this type of device.

But considering the crime rates and the diversity of housing in Mexico, how feasible is it to have one of these teams?

Of course, with a system of this type, the risk of theft persists, there is even a possibility of theft of the surveillance equipment itself, something that Martí admits and says they have contemplated and implemented different solutions in this regard.

The first of them is the durability of the battery, its Blink device, it says, can keep working for up to two years with the use of regular batteries, thereby expanding the possibilities of image capture in the event of an incident.

In the case of the Ring portfolio, they have a subscription model that allows users to have their recording services in the cloud, so in case of theft, the criminal will not have access to the collected material as happens with equipment whose storage is intended for memory. internal.

“The people who are potentially taking the device will be exposed in the cloud images and this information can later be used to make a report,” he said.

The company also has a special replacement guarantee for users who are unlucky enough to have their camera or mounts stolen, which is also intended to encourage reporting.

The Inegi points out that in 2023, 31.3% million crimes occurred in Mexico but 92.9% were not reported or the authority did not initiate an investigation file. In the country, the most frequent crimes were fraud, robbery or assault on the street or public transport and extortion.

“With the video and the official complaint, we can replace these devices at no cost,” said Martí, who added that fortunately this “happens little,” although he did not provide figures in this regard.

In the case of Blink, the recording can be saved via a USB that connects to an included synchronization module that is placed inside the house.

Martí Arena pointed out that although the brand’s devices are designed to withstand changes in weather and other factors for working outdoors, users can also use them inside their home.

The price?

The prices of these devices may vary depending on their features. In the case of Ring, those that have a camera can be found from 1,249 pesos on Amazon, while the Blink Outdoor 4, which promises two years of battery life, costs 2,099 pesos.

Devices from other brands with similar characteristics also range in this price, for example Steren sells a video doorbell for 1,799 pesos, Energizer sells a model that ranges from 2,200 pesos or the Tapo D230S1 doorbell, which is sold for 2,299 pesos.
