The plenary session of Section A1 of the Supreme Court of Greece has decided this Tuesday by 9 votes to 1 to prevent the Hellenes party, heir to the neo-Nazi formation Golden Dawn.
The court considers that “it is a continuation of the criminal organization Amanecer Dorado” and therefore decreed its veto in the legislative elections scheduled for May 21.
The organization was led by Ilias Kasidiaris, a former member of Golden Dawn, and had tried to circumvent the veto imposed by the so-called Voridis Amendment, which bans parties with far-right ideology.
The left-wing opposition has accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his conservative New Democracy party of trying to win over far-right votes.
The Supreme Court also ruled this Tuesday in favor of the participation of the far-right National Party of Anastasios Kanellopoulos. Until now the Greek courts have already vetoed other formations such as the Patriotic Union, Patrida or Greek Democrats.
Before the ruling was made known, the Greek opposition leader, Alexis Tsipras, has argued that neo-Nazi supporters “should be in prison, not campaigning” and recalled that they have denounced any party that includes convicted individuals linked to Golden Dawn. “If you want to defend democracy, you don’t resort to undemocratic methods,” he pointed out.
