The governor of North Darfur calls for humanitarian aid and affirms that the situation is “very catastrophic”

June 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The governor of North Darfur, Abderramán Nimr, has requested this Friday urgent humanitarian aid and has assured that the situation in the Sudanese state is “very catastrophic” given the withdrawal of the NGOs from the land due to the continuous fighting between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In this sense, he has urgently requested the delivery of humanitarian aid to prevent more deaths due to lack of food or medicines in the face of a situation of violence that has forced hundreds of families to take refuge in neighboring El Fasher, where the situation is also tense.

In the last three days there have been intense fighting in different parts of the country. Areas close to the capital, Khartoum, have been shelled with heavy artillery, such as in Omdurman, while amid the chaos, shootings and looting have been reported in the popular market in the town of Nyala, in South Darfur.

More clashes have taken place in the South Kordofan region despite the proximity of Eid al-Adha, the feast of the Sacrifice, according to the newspaper ‘Sudan Tribune’. The NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned this Friday that the situation is critical for civilians in many parts of the country.

On the eve, in fact, the United States Under Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee, announced during a hearing of a Foreign Affairs committee of the House of Representatives that the peace talks on Sudan in the Saudi city of Jeddah are suspended because the format “does not allow” the expected results to be obtained.

The conflict does not show signs of a short-term solution after the failure of successive ceasefire attempts. The violence derives from discrepancies over the integration of the RSF within the Armed Forces, one of the key points of the agreement signed in December to move towards a civilian government.
