July 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Ethiopia is willing to talk with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray (TPLF) “at any time and place”, to put an end to the confrontation between the two sides that broke out in November 2020.
Redwan Hussein, National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, has stated that the Government “is ready to hold talks at any time and anywhere” and that “the talks must begin without preconditions”, as The Ethiopian newspaper ‘Addis Standard’ has reported.
“The African Union (AU) is leading the process and can request logistical support from any source,” Hussein said, adding that the government has also allowed diplomats from the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the UN to travel to Tigray. .
A TPLF spokesman announced on July 18 the appointment of a representative delegation to negotiate a peace agreement with the Ethiopian government.
The TPLF thus responded to the Ethiopian government’s announcement of the appointment of a seven-member delegation to negotiate with the rebel group, which has already begun to function.
The government delegation is led by the Ethiopian deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Demeke Mekonnen, and would have started work last week.
The Tigray region is in practice isolated by military forces, so it is not possible to send medicines and other humanitarian aid to a population that is on the brink of famine as a result of the confrontation between the Army and the TPLF that broke out in November 2020.
