Cameroon’s Ministry of Territorial Administration has prohibited the media from reporting on the state of health of the president, Paul Biya, amid speculation about his absence at several events to which he was invited in recent weeks.
The director of the cabinet, Samuel Mwondo Ayolo, has had to come forward this week to ensure that the 91-year-old president enjoys an “excellent state of health” after “some malicious individuals have spread rumors” about his death on social networks.
The Ministry of Territorial Administration specified in a statement published this Thursday that these “lucubrations have the unhealthy objective of disturbing the tranquility of Cameroonians, sowing confusion and doubt in minds with a view to placing the country in uncertainty.”
The ministry has indicated that the head of state “is the first institution of the Republic”, so “debates about his status are about national security.” “Any debate in the media about the status of the President of the Republic is prohibited. Offenders must face the rigor of the law,” he stressed.
“From today, I ask each governor to launch in their competent services surveillance cells in charge of monitoring and recording all broadcasts and debates in private media and identifying the authors of biased comments, including those who act through social networks. social”, he added.
Biya’s health has been called into question following his absence from both the UN General Assembly, where he was scheduled to speak, and the Francophonie summit. His last official appearance was more than a month ago, in early September, at the China-Africa summit.
