June 15 () –
The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, arrived this past Friday in Switzerland to participate starting today in his great peace initiative for the country, the so-called Global Peace Summit; “two days of talks between different nations, united despite everything with the common objective of bringing a just and lasting peace to Ukraine,” the president said.
The summit is marked by the expected absence of Russia, which has completely rejected the Ukrainian peace plan by refusing to withdraw its forces and return to Ukraine the sovereignty of the Ukrainian regions under its control, as kyiv demands. Nor will any representation from China, close to Moscow, which has been promoting its own peace initiative for months, attend the summit.
However, nearly a hundred countries and international organizations will attend the summit. The United States will be represented by the country’s Vice President, Kamala Harris, and the White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan. Together they “will reaffirm their support for the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression,” according to a statement from the White House.
The summit, which will take place in the city of Lucerne, is designed, in Zelensky’s opinion, in such a way that “all countries will have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership” in the form of a “responsible majority with the potential to bring peace closer.” and fully restore the Charter of the United Nations.
The Swiss Government has stated that, among the specific points to be discussed, is the promotion of a consensus on a possible “peace framework” and the determination of a ‘roadmap’ on how to involve both Russia and Ukraine. in the process.
Freedom of navigation in the Black Sea will also be discussed as well as a possible agreement to stop the bombing of nuclear energy infrastructure, such as the Zaporizhia power plant, the release of all prisoners and the return of Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia, origin of the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2023.
