The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) will hold its national congress in January instead of March, with the aim of preparing for early elections that, barring any surprises, will finally be held on February 23, after this has been agreed upon. Tuesday the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
One of the AFD leaders, Alice Weidel, a foreseeable official candidate for the position of chancellor, has confirmed the advancement of the forum, for which there is still no clear date or location. The program with which the party will participate in the elections is expected to emerge from the meeting.
The AfD aims to capitalize at the national level on the progress it has already made at the regional level. Polls give him a voting intention of 17 percent, seven points more than the votes obtained in the 2021 elections.
Germany had planned to hold the next general elections in September 2025, but the departure of the liberals from the tripartite government, led by social democrat Olaf Scholz, has accelerated the deadlines. The chancellor initially proposed submitting a motion of confidence in Parliament in mid-January, but after negotiating with the CDU this vote will take place on December 16.
