MADRID Dec. 7 () –
Some 50 people have been arrested in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, during a new night of protests against the Government of Irakli Kobajidze, targeted by the internal opposition and by the international community following the disputed parliamentary elections in October.
The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed, specifically, 48 arrests, hours after reporting the arrest of several people accused of “leading and participating” in the violent acts, according to state television.
The authorities estimate that the total number of detainees now amounts to around 300 since the start of this latest wave of protests more than a week ago, which have been concentrated mainly on Rustaveli Avenue and in the vicinity of the Georgian Parliament.
Demonstrations continue in the country as the prime minister faces the opposition and the country’s president, Salomé Zurabishvili, who insist that institutions have been “hijacked” since the October 26 elections and demand that a new electoral process that provides a solution to the internal crisis.
However, Parliament has already approved the call for the presidential elections, which will take place on December 14 and will end Zurabishvili’s mandate as head of state, despite the fact that the president has stressed that she will not leave office until repeat the elections, which ended with the victory of the Georgian Dream government party by a narrow margin and amid complaints of fraud.
