It’s amazing to see the strongest man in the world lift 452 kilos of SSD disksbut what has amazed me is that each SSD has a capacity of 122TB. Is it possible?
at the fair SC24 which is being held this weekend in Atlanta (United States), a curious world record has been broken for SSD lifting. A good marketing move to present something historic: a 122 TB SSD. Of course, for now, only for servers and companies.
The current SSDs that hit stores only have 2 or 4 TB, so a 122TB SSDit is an incredible achievement. And very heavy, as demonstrated by the red face of the Mountain in the following video.
Lifting half a ton of SSD drives
Vdura is a company that sells AI infrastructure. Phison is a manufacturer of high-capacity SSD drives for data centers and enterprises.
Both companies have teamed up to break a world record: lift 452 kilos of SSD disks. This is only available to Hafþór Júlíus Björnssonthe Icelandic athlete and actor, who played the character of The Mountain in Game of Thrones.
In this video we can see the Mountain lifting almost half a ton of SSD driveswith a total capacity of 282,624 Petabytes (PB):
Okay, it’s true that it only lifts them a few inches off the ground, but that’s something almost no other human being can do. Many of us would find it difficult to even lift the empty metal boxes…
It is not the record of Hafþór Júlíus Björnssonwho in 2020 managed to lift 501 kilos in a gym in Iceland.
The marketing move is very spectacular, but what interests us is that SSD with 122 TB capacity. That’s between 30 and 60 times more than the largest SSDs on the market now.
It is about the Phison Pascari D205V SSDwhich requires a PCIe Gen5 connection and has a capacity of 122.88 TB.
According to account Techspotoffers sequential read speeds of up to 14,600 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,200 MB/s. The random read performance speed is 3,000K 4K IOPS with 35K random write 16K IOPS.
We do not know the price, because it is customized depending on the volume of the order. But each SSD costs a few thousand euros.
The Mountain of Game of Thrones has managed to lift 452 Kilos of 122 TB SSD units. It is not something that is achieved every day.
