The fall of Michel Barnier’s Government forces the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, to look for another person to replace the former European Commissioner as Prime Minister, and the left has already made it clear that if it is not someone from the New Popular Front (NFP) there will be an “automatic” censorship of the future cabinet.
The NFP, of which La Francia Insumisa (LFI) and the Socialist Party (PS) are part, among others, is the bloc with the most seats in the National Assembly since the July elections and, although it does not have a sufficient majority, it claims who is the one who has the right to take the reins.
“If Emmanuel Macron does not appoint a prime minister from the NFP, we will automatically censure the Government,” said the leader of the ‘insubordinates’ in the Assembly, Mathilde Panot, who made it clear in an interview on LCI that they will not accept. the continuation of Macronist policy”.
In this sense, he has stressed that the president’s theses have already been “defeated” at the polls and this Wednesday in Parliament, where a motion of censure was successful for the first time in more than six decades, also supported by the far-right of Marine Le Pen.
Barnier went to the Elysée this Thursday morning to formalize his resignation and throughout the day the president also met with the presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate. The head of the Lower House, Yael Braun-Pivet, has advocated in France Inter for forming a government “quickly”, with a view to resuming as soon as possible the debate on the budgets that ended up costing the outgoing prime minister his job.
The French press agrees that the replacement will be quick and Macron will not take weeks to look for a replacement for Barnier, but rather days or even hours. In a race without clear favorites, the election and future policies will have to satisfy a broader spectrum than that made up of the Macronists and the classic center-right.
One of the names in the pools is that of the Minister of Defense, Sébastian Lecornu, close to Macron. “I am not a candidate for anything,” he said, however, this Thursday when questioned about this topic on RTL.
The one who has publicly run is the former socialist candidate Ségolene Royal, who has declared herself “available” and has even written to the president. In this sense, he has called for “a left-wing candidate, experienced and capable of uniting”, requirements that he considers meeting, as he has stated on his social networks.
