The French Foreign Minister believes that Spain seeks "political gain" by recognizing Palestine

The French Foreign Minister, Stephane Séjournéaccused this Wednesday the European countries that have recently recognized Palestine as a State—Spain, Ireland and Norway—of want to take political advantage of this decision as part of the electoral campaign for the European elections.

“The question before us today, and I have said it very clearly to my Spanish and Irish counterparts, is what will be tomorrow after the question of recognition. What is the diplomatic utility?”, the minister asked himself in the French Senate.

In this sense, he has assured that “France does not adopt a political position“, but “seek diplomatic solutions to the crisis.” “Tell me exactly what Spanish recognition has changed in the situation in Gaza the next day. “Nothing,” he declared in front of the senators, reports Europa Press.

Séjourné has reiterated that Paris is in favor of the two-state solution and has set the example that it is collaborating with regional partners in the UN Security Council, which has yet to examine a proposed resolution from Algeria to condemn the recent attacks against Rafá.

The harshness of the Israeli attacks on Gaza has awakened a feeling of support for the Palestinian populationmaterialized in some cases in the recognition of the Palestinian State by international powers despite Israel’s forceful response that has threatened consequences.

Macron Calls for Essential Reforms in Palestine

For his part, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has asked the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, in a call to carry out “essential reforms” within the institutions with a view to recognizing the Palestinian State.

The French president has expressed to Abbas his support for “a Palestinian Authority reformed and strengthened, capable of exercising its responsibilities in all Palestinian territoriesincluding the Gaza Strip, for the benefit of the Palestinian people.”

Macron has thus reiterated Paris’ “commitment” to “work to build with its European and Arab partners a common vision of peace that offers security guarantees for Palestinians and Israelis and include a perspective of recognizing the State of Palestine in a useful dynamic.”

On the other hand, he has sent “his most sincere condolences to the Palestinian people for the intolerable human cost” of Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip and after “a new tragedy” such as that of the displaced persons camp in Rafah on Sunday night, which left at least 45 dead.

“Both presidents They called for an immediate end to Israeli military intervention in Gaza, as requested by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). There is no safe area in Rafah today,” the Elysée highlighted in a statement.

Macron has also stressed the France’s determination to work with Algeria and its partners in the United Nations Security Council to approve a resolution on the latest events in Rafá.

The French president already said the day before that he was “fully willing” to recognize the Palestinian state —as Spain, Norway and Ireland have done—, although he assured that this step must be taken “at a useful time” and with consensus among the main regional actors in the Middle East, including Israel.
