As expected, Samsung has released the Firmware update that fixes the problem present in some units of the high-end Samsung 990 Pro SSDs. This failure caused the SSD health values in storage drive information programs to drop alarmingly day after day.
The Korean company has been able to replicate the conditions in which this error occurred and has released a firmware so that Samsung 990 Pro users can prevent the error from appearing in the future.
We will have to see what policy the company follows for users who have already suffered a performance degradation, or if the error was due to incorrect readings of the health SMART values of the SSD 990 Pro and is solved with the firmware
In any case, the company has indicated that this firmware will not restore SMART values after the update, so affected users may have to contact Samsung to seek solutions within the warranty period.
Samsung statement (translated):
Samsung has been investigating customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART of the SSD 990 PRO. These anomalies were found to be caused by issues with the firmware of the SSD 990 PRO. Consequently, today, February 13, 2023, a firmware update was released that corrects these anomalies. (SMART values are not restored to factory settings after firmware upgrade. Actual SMART values for each SSD vary depending on user environment and usage conditions.)
