The Finnish Embassy in Moscow notified Russia that it received three suspicious envelopes on Thursday, at least one of them containing white powder, and that they were addressed to the military attache of its diplomatic mission, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
“When the first envelope was opened, a white powder was found in it, after which the other two letters were sealed. The three were delivered by the diplomatic mission to the Russian law enforcement agencies,” Zajarova explained on Friday.
Likewise, Zajarova has added that the Russian authorities are already studying the envelopes, after which “the Finnish Embassy in Moscow will be informed about the results,” according to the TASS news agency.
Finland joined last week as a new member of NATO, thus becoming the 31st ally of the military bloc, once Turkey completed the ratification of its entry after months of reluctance due to the lack of cooperation in the fight against Kurdish terrorism in Finland and Sweden, whose processing is still pending.
After Finland’s entry into NATO, Moscow warned that, due to this, it was “forced to adopt tactical and strategic countermeasures” in the face of what it describes as an “intrusion” by the Atlantic Alliance on its security. Days later, the Russian Army began maneuvers of its air defense forces on the border.
Finland formally applied to join NATO in May 2022, along with Sweden, in an unprecedented turn to its policy of neutrality that was directly in response to the growing threat stemming from Russian expansionist activities in Ukraine. Not surprisingly, Finland shares more than 1,300 kilometers of border with Russia.
