The capital of Peru will be governed by the extreme right. In a vote-by-vote final, the wealthy businessman of the fascist Popular Renovation party, Rafael López Aliaga, won the elections for mayor of Lima.
López Aliaga, known as “Porky”, obtained 26.2%, against 25.3% of the retired general Daniel Urresti, accused of human rights violations. This is the lowest percentage obtained by a mayor of Lima in more than 40 years.
The Peru Libre party, which led President Pedro Castillo to the government, was in last place among the eight candidates in Lima, with just 1.4%. This defeat and the victory in the capital of a radical opponent of the bloc seeking to remove him from the presidency is a blow to Castillo.
Money laundering
Another group that has been severely defeated in these elections has been the Fujimorismo, which could not win any governorship or mayoralty. In the interior of the country, local movements won the majority.
López Aliaga, investigated for money laundering and with a millionaire tax debt, was a presidential candidate in 2021, coming third. With this victory he is in an expectant position for a new candidacy for the presidency.
After his victory was confirmed, the future mayor of Lima, who will take office on January 1, asked Castillo to resign from the presidency. López Aliaga hopes to turn the capital’s mayor’s office into an anti-government platform.
