The European Parliament recognizes Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela

( Spanish) – The European Parliament approved on Thursday, by 309 votes in favour, the resolution presented by the European People’s Party, calling for the chamber to recognise Edmundo González Urrutia as the “legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela”, as well as to recognise María Corina Machado “as the leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela”.

A motion with which Parliament sets out its position regarding the situation in Venezuela and with which it requests all member states of the European Union to do the same. However, this resolution is not binding on the countries that make up the community bloc.

So far, the 27 leaders of the community bloc continue to request that the Venezuelan authorities present the results of the presidential elections of July 28 and that these be verifiable in order to be able to recognize a winner.

Following a proposal from the Popular Party, both the Spanish Parliament and Senate also recognised González Urrutia last week as the winner of the elections that took place on 28 July.

With the approval of both non-legislative initiatives, the two chambers asked the Spanish Government to take a step in its position on Venezuela and do the same, but the Executive has ruled this out.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, even went so far as to say that they will not change their position as they are working with the rest of the European Union partners to achieve a unity “that will allow us to have room for mediation between now and the end of the year, so that we can find a solution that conveys the democratic will expressed at the polls by the Venezuelan people.”
