BRUSSELS, Oct. 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Parliament has demanded this Thursday the “immediate return to constitutional order” in Burkina Faso after the coup d’etat that took place at the end of September and that is the second that takes place in just eight months in the African country.
In a resolution adopted throughout the day, MEPs have expressed their concern about the alleged violations of Human Rights and have requested “return to a civil government” as soon as possible.
“This second coup d’état undermines the process harvested towards the return to a constitutional order”, they have asserted before insisting on the need to “respect the roadmap to call transparent elections on July 1, 2024”.
They have also urged the next government to “allow people, including minorities, to exercise their civil and political rights.” In addition, they have warned of “Russian disinformation campaigns against EU missions in Africa.”
“The people of Burkina Faso have suffered many violent attacks, in most cases committed by jihadist groups”, the European Parliament has pointed out, which has stressed that the EU “is willing to intensify its commitment to the country”. “The leaders of Burkina Faso must create the necessary conditions for this to be possible,” says the text, which asks the member states to increase financial and humanitarian support for the country.
Likewise, the European Parliament has condemned the attacks perpetrated against the French Embassy and Consulate and “other European institutions and symbols throughout the country”, while expressing its “concern about the activities carried out by the Wagner Group”, owned by a Russian businessman linked to the country’s president, Vladimir Putin.
