BRUSSELS Oct. 23 () –
This Wednesday, the European Parliament awarded its journalism prize – known as ‘Daphne Caruana Galizia’ – to the investigation into the disappearance of at least 51,433 unaccompanied migrant minors after arriving in European territory between 2021 and 2023.
The investigation has been carried out by media outlets from Germany, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and the United Kingdom, as detailed by the European Parliament in a statement in which they highlight the participation of the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, in the award ceremony.
The investigation ‘Lost in Europe’ (‘Lost in Europe’, in Spanish) has brought to light the “chilling” data that an average of almost 47 migrant minors have disappeared in Europe since 2021. The analysis takes into account the data from 37 countries indicating that “tens of thousands of migrant children” are missing.
“Daphne Caruana Galizia’s legacy lives on in the work of journalists who live to tell the truth and refuse to be silenced. Her fight for justice prevails over the threats that attempt to undermine their important work,” said Metsola, who stressed that “freedom of the press is not negotiable.”
This award from the European Parliament is a tribute to the Maltese journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered at the age of 53 in a car bomb attack in 2017 while carrying out investigations into corruption that affected the Maltese government.
