The European Commission approves the Data Law: companies will have to share their data with their rivals

The European Commission has concluded a political agreement that has been reached today with the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, giving rise to the Data Law that was proposed in February 2022. It has had to wait a little over a year for it to be carried out, but it is finally here and we are going to see its implications.

The Data Law has a clear purpose, being the stimulation of the data economy of the European Union. This means that it is intended to unlock the information that companies, until now, kept under lock and key. Yes, the data generated can be freely shared between the companies if the users so require.

Users will be in control of the data generated by their connected devices and all services related to them. This means that, for example, in case of a repair of a technological product, the user can choose to take this product together with all its data to an unofficial repair place.

Protection of users against any type of abusive clauses that have been imposed unilaterally. The European Commission wants small and medium-sized companies to have the same opportunities in the digital market, making them have fair agreements and negotiations in the same position.

Public bodies will be able to access the data of private companies. It may be one of the most controversial measures, but this one will only apply in the event of a public emergency of any kind ranging from floods to wildfires.
