BRUSSELS, Nov. 1 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, expressed his concern on Tuesday about the “political vacuum” in which Lebanon lives, aggravated after the end of the mandate of the president, Michel Aoun, due to the inability of Parliament to elect to a successor.
Lawmakers have failed in their four attempts to name a replacement for the 89-year-old veteran Christian leader. The post has become vacant, at a time when Lebanon “is facing a worsening socio-economic situation,” according to Borrell.
“The EU once again calls on the Lebanese leaders to organize presidential elections and form a government with the utmost urgency,” added the head of European diplomacy, who recalled in a statement that there has been no kind of political agreement since the general elections in May.
In this sense, he stressed that in July the bloc already renewed the framework of sanctions that allows punishing those who “block a way out of the Lebanese crisis”, although he reiterated that the EU is willing to help Lebanon to achieve “the recovery and stability it deserves.
Borrell has urged local leaders to “assume their responsibilities” and take measures, also with a view to facing the process of pending reforms and finalizing the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that would give minimal aid to the extremely poor economy. local.
